"A Declaration of Rights is, by reciprocity, a Declaration of Duties also. Whatever is my right as a man, is also the right of another; and it becomes my duty to guarantee, as well as to possess."

In 1966, the Supreme Court in Miranda v. Arizona declared that the police are responsible for informing detainees of their Fifth Amendment rights prior to any custodial interrogation.
Thesis: Although Miranda rights have impaired police officers' ability to secure confessions from criminals, Miranda rights perpetuate the nation's constitutional responsibilities to protect the rights and freedoms of every citizen. Fifty years later, with the safety of the public still intact and the rights of the people further protected, it can be concluded that Miranda rights have triggered a rebalancing of rights and responsibilities.
